Dunedin Report June - August 2025

Natalie Carpenter (a student at Dunedin School of Art) was really inspired by her trip/stall at Printopia. Particularly looking at the diverse collections of artworks and talking with knowledgeable artists. It can feel a little isolated in the beautiful little corner of the country (Dunedin), but she felt the strong momentum of printmaking in NZ and felt hopeful for the future and she was excited to be part of it.

The Print Studio at Dunedin School of Art had the pleasure of hosting Printopia’s keynote presenter Ryan O’Malley for a one-week residency. Ryan is a passionate printmaker, educator, collaborator and event organiser teaching at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Wasting little time in sharing his knowledge and community with the students and staff, Ryan presented a public seminar, explored the Ōtakou Press Room, engaged in a critique session with students and showcased a vast array of works from friends, students and his own intricately detailed works. He generously bestowed his multi-colour, multi-block woodcut of a grasshopper to the school, which took an afternoon to install with student help on a gloriously sunny Dunedin afternoon.
