Waikato Report June - August 2025
Vicki Jones
It has been a busy time for Waikato printmakers over the past couple of months: We have enjoyed being able to view the NZPPA exhibition (PCANZ is a sponsor), particularly the print elements. More recently we enjoyed being the first stop for the PCANZ Small Print exhibition. It was a real pleasure to see so many different techniques from printmakers from throughout New Zealand. Do try to see it when it visits your area. A number of local printmakers also enjoyed visiting Printopia recently, in Auckland.
Our March social gathering included an optional challenge to make a piece of work that was 3D – and Caroline Peacock shared work she did while on two residencies in Italy. The next social gathering coincides with the opening of two print exhibitions at the Artspost gallery, Victoria Street, Hamilton, 12 July 1-3 pm. A PCANZ exhibition honouring the print work of the late Ruth Davey, entitled “With Ruth in Mind” will open alongside WAIPRINT, an exhibition of work by Waikato Society of Arts printmakers. If you are in Hamilton, do drop in for the openings or for a look at the exhibitions. In conjunction with the “With Ruth in Mind” exhibition, Steph McLellan will be teaching a workshop on “Shift Print,” one of Ruth’s techniques… on Saturday 12th July… registration details are on the PCANZ website.
This year’s WAIPRINT guest artist is PCANZ member Lorraine Sabini from Kawhia. Some of her work will incorporate techniques she learned at PCANZ Summer School in January.
Taupo based printmakers, Sally-Ann Davies and Maggie Dawson, are having an exhibition in the Ruth Davey Gallery at ArtsPost. 'Contours and Whispers' will open June 7th, 1-3 pm.
PCANZ member, Renee Marjolein has an exhibition, “The Bright Side” at The Mandarin Tree,
Gordonton, 10-31 May. PCANZ Printmaker Maree Glass is joining Janet Knighton and Frances van Dammen with an exhibition at Wintec Gallery, 52 Alexandra Street, Hamilton. 19-24 May, 10am to 2 pm. ‘Prints, plates and Paintings’.
Our next social gathering will be July 12 (combined with exhibition openings), September 13 and November 8… if you’re passing through Hamilton on any of these dates please come and join us in the WSA Print studio, ArtPost building, 10 am until midday.
